Functional Assessment Services

Disability Management Services

Occupational Therapists (OT) roles may vary according to the client’s service requirement. The OT will perform the required assessment and then implement the appropriate interventions. The goal is to restore the client’s pre-accident/injury skills. The interventions may include working with an individual to adapt their daily routines so that they are easier for the individual to perform; and/or suggesting changes in an individual’s environment in order to allow him/her to be more independent in their activities of daily living.

The Functional Abilities Evaluation (FAE) measures the claimant’s present physical abilities as they compare to his/her essential pre-injury tasks of daily living and/or job demands. The FAE is structured as a series of tests with built-in cross-checks to provide reliable and valid results. As a Certified ARCON Testing Center, we are equipped to accurately test lifting capabilities, grip strength and spine and extremity range of motion using state of the art evaluation hardware and software offered by the ARCON System. Alternatively, Hanoun Functional Abilities Evaluation Protocols are utilized in the assessment process.

A Catastrophic Injury Case Manager, a Registered Nurse or Disability Specialist with appropriate training, will be accountable to the administration of the case/claim. The Case Manager will liaise with all treatment professionals and keep the client up-to-date with respect to their claim and medical status; facilitate hospital discharge; and coordinate, assess and monitor treatment(s) with all associated professionals.

A Disability Manager and/or Occupational Therapist complete(s) a Future Care Cost Analysis to determine a fair settlement for complex injuries cases and permanent disability cases. Future Care Cost Analysis is able to provide the client with the accurate information related to the claimant’s financial needs and to facilitate the negotiation process.

The Work-site Assessment provides the client with accurate information related to the claimant’s pre-accident work demands. The report includes digital images of workstations and an analysis of the physical demands of the job. Where applicable, the report also includes recommendations to facilitate a return to work. This assessment can assist in the development of a rehabilitation program that corresponds to the physical demands of the job.

A Labour Market Survey is performed after the Transferable Skills Analysis (TSA) is completed by the Occupational Therapist. The Vocational Specialist identifies job availability in the claimant’s geographical area based on the vocational alternatives identified in the TSA. The Vocational Specialist provides the claimant with job leads and job market information and support in securing employment which is suitable to the claimant’s identified skills.

Independent Medical Examinations

An Independent Medical Examination is performed when a confirmation or clarification of a diagnosis and prognosis is required. The Independent Medical may also recommend a treatment plan which would assist the claimant to pre-injury/illness level of functioning. This assessment is conducted by a medical specialist specific to the type of injury/illness in question through a comprehensive interview and examination (as appropriate), and a review of file documentation. The Independent Medical specialist prepares a report for the client, the report is submitted into our Quality Auditing System to ensure accuracy and that our client’s questions have been adequately addressed.
