Before your first chiropractic appointment, it’s normal to have questions and concerns about how the treatment plan will be developed. The good news is that chiropractors understand that you may have questions to discuss and they will set aside some time during your initial consultation to address them. A great way to relieve any hesitation or concern you may be feeling is to understand what to expect from your first visit. Here’s what you need to know about your initial chiropractic care session.
The length of the visit depends on the injury or condition that you need to get treated. Initial visits usually last from 45 to 60 minutes, but subsequent visits will be shorter. The first few visits are to begin building the therapeutic relationship by finding the cause of the problem and developing a treatment plan. Afterwards, the treatments will take up the entire appointment, usually around 30 to 40 minutes.
The first thing your chiropractor will do is review your health history. You will need to fill out forms to provide background information on any medications you may be taking, previous surgeries or health conditions, as well as your symptoms and current conditions. Questions in the review may include:
After understanding the background information of your injury, the chiropractor will perform general tests such as taking your blood pressure and pulse, as well as testing your respiration and reflexes. They will also conduct specific orthopedic tests to examine range of motion in the affected area, pain level, and muscle tone and strength. In some cases, you may need to further diagnostic studies such as an X-ray, MRI scan, or other laboratory tests.
After these assessments, the chiropractor will create a treatment plan that caters to the extent of your injury, general health, spinal condition, and goals. Whether you are seeking simple relief of pain or discomfort or need to rehabilitate after an injury, your chiropractor can help you achieve these goals.
