Everything that they say will take place, takes place. They don’t operate by not doing things the way they should be done.

I’ve had a great experience with my physiotherapist Noel Laguna. He takes the time to explain each exercise, including which muscles it targets, how they function, and why the exercise is important. This understanding has really helped me stay motivated and consistent with my exercises at home. Highly recommend his knowledgeable and patient approach!

I have had both physical therapy and massage therapy here. My experiences with Noel have always been professional, informative and result driven. He has made my neck and shoulders have more range and virtually pain free after a few weeks. Larissa was amazing explaining everything I needed to know for after massage care. The staff overall are respectful, prompt and always address me by name.

About the clinic

MedRehab Group Richmond Hill

MedRehab Group Richmond Hill is a physiotherapy clinic at 955 Major Mackenzie Drive West, Unit 106, at Bathurst Street on the Richmond Hill and Maple border. It is the group's most complete clinic: physiotherapy, massage therapy, chiropractic, acupuncture, chiropody, naturopathy and osteopathy in one building, open until 8pm three nights a week and until 3pm on Saturdays.

Physiotherapy at Major Mackenzie and Bathurst

Physiotherapy treatment and assessments are close to six in ten visits. Jacquelin Rotella, Loremie Javier, Noel Laguna, Palak Darji and Reemal Reemal treat back and neck pain, shoulder, hip and knee injuries, arthritis, recovery after surgery and fractures, sports injuries, and pain after car accidents and work injuries. Richmond Hill is also one of two clinics with radial shockwave therapy for stubborn tendon problems such as plantar fasciitis, Achilles and patellar tendinopathy and tennis elbow.

Treatment starts with a one-to-one assessment and a plan you agree together, then combines manual therapy, a progressive exercise programme, education, and electrotherapy, ultrasound or shockwave where they suit the problem. Dedicated one-to-one sessions are available for people who want longer hands-on time. Dry needling is available from physiotherapists rostered for it.

What we treat at Major Mackenzie and Bathurst

This is the largest and broadest clinic in the group, with more than 13,000 attended visits a year. Physiotherapy treatment and assessments are the majority of them. Foot and heel pain is a distinctive strand here because chiropody and shockwave sit alongside physiotherapy: plantar fasciitis affects about one person in ten over a lifetime, peaking between 40 and 60. Beyond that, the physiotherapists treat low back and neck pain, shoulder and knee injuries, rehab after surgery, sports injuries, work injuries and pain after car accidents. Older patients are a large part of the caseload; roughly one in three Canadians over 65 lives with chronic pain (Canadian Pain Task Force).

Feet and older patients are two threads in a very broad caseload. The physiotherapists here treat:

  • Low back pain, sciatica and neck pain
  • Plantar fasciitis, Achilles and other tendon problems
  • Shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand injuries
  • Knee and hip pain, including arthritis
  • Ankle sprains and foot pain
  • Rehab after surgery, fractures and joint replacement
  • Sports injuries
  • Car accident and workplace injuries
  • Chronic pain and deconditioning
  • Balance, mobility and fall prevention

How treatment works

Assessment first, then a plan that draws on what the building offers. Hands-on manual therapy, a progressive exercise programme and education on load and pacing are the base. Radial shockwave is used within physiotherapy for stubborn tendon problems such as plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendinopathy, after a trial of loading exercise. Ultrasound and electrotherapy are added where they help; custom orthotics are fitted on site. Chiropractic, massage, acupuncture, chiropody and naturopathy are available in the same building when a combined plan makes sense, and one plan is coordinated rather than several running in parallel.

Your first visit

New assessments are one visit in seven here, so the front desk and the physiotherapists run them all day. It is one-to-one with a registered physiotherapist: history, movement testing, a working diagnosis and a plan. No referral is needed. If several problems are going on at once, say so at the start; the assessment sets priorities rather than trying to treat everything in one session.

Also at this clinic

Registered massage therapy with Alla Pavlenko, Craig Casimiri, Larissa Plokhova, Lin Cao and Tien Dao is the second most-booked service. Chiropractic care is provided by Dr. Alvin De Leon, DC and Dr. Daniella Astorino, DC, and registered acupuncture by Babak Parsad. Benjamin Cohen, chiropodist, sees foot and nail problems and fits custom orthotics; Rahim Habib provides naturopathic care; Alex Babin provides osteopathic manual practice. Your physiotherapist can bring any of them into your plan.

Hours, parking and getting here

Open Monday, Tuesday and Thursday 9am to 8pm, Wednesday 9am to 7pm, Friday 9am to 5pm and Saturday 9am to 3pm. Free parking at the plaza. York Region Transit's Major Mackenzie and Bathurst routes stop at the corner.

Paying for physiotherapy

About two thirds of visits are billed to an insurer. The clinic bills most extended health plans directly and handles WSIB claims and works with your auto insurer for physiotherapy after a car accident. Private-pay fees are available from reception.

Questions

Before your first visit

Is this clinic in Richmond Hill or Maple?

Both, in practice. The address is Richmond Hill, at 955 Major Mackenzie Drive West at Bathurst, and Maple is directly across the road. Patients from Vaughan, Richmond Hill and King City all use it.

Do I need a referral for physiotherapy?

No. You can book an assessment directly. Check whether your extended health plan needs a doctor's note for reimbursement.

Is shockwave part of physiotherapy or a separate service?

It is used within physiotherapy. Your physiotherapist assesses the tendon or heel problem first and usually starts with loading exercise. Shockwave is added if the problem has been present for months and is not responding, and it is combined with exercise rather than used on its own.

What if I have several problems at once?

Tell the physiotherapist at the assessment. They will work out which problem is driving the others, set priorities, and build a single plan. If chiropody, chiropractic or massage would help a specific part of it, the referral happens in-house and the notes stay in one file.

Do you offer shockwave therapy?

Yes. Richmond Hill has radial shockwave therapy, used within physiotherapy for stubborn tendon problems such as plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinopathy and tennis elbow. Your physiotherapist decides at the assessment whether it suits your problem.

What other services are at this clinic?

Massage therapy, chiropractic, acupuncture, chiropody and custom orthotics, naturopathy and osteopathy. It is the group's most complete clinic.

How late are you open?

Until 8pm Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, 7pm Wednesday, 5pm Friday, and 3pm on Saturday.

Does the clinic direct bill insurance?

Yes, for most extended health plans, WSIB and auto insurance claims.
