Acupuncture in Vaughan

Welcome to Building A. Ying Wei is the registered acupuncturist at our Vaughan clinic, 10395 Weston Road at the corner of Major Mackenzie Drive, and she is also one of the Registered Massage Therapists here, so the two are easy to combine. Acupuncture is a small part of this clinic’s week, a few sessions a month rather than a full day, which is why we ask you to book ahead; the front desk will tell you the next date she has open.

Who books it here

This is a young clinic in a young neighbourhood. Vellore Village and the subdivisions north of Major Mackenzie are full of families, and most of the acupuncture we do here is for the parents: neck and shoulder tension from two hours a day on the 400 and the 407, headaches, and the sleep and stress problems that go with a full house. The other group is people already in physiotherapy with us for a back or neck injury who want something added for the pain while the rehabilitation does its work.

What acupuncture is used for

Ying Wei practises within traditional Chinese medicine, so the list is wider than muscles and joints:

• Chronic neck, shoulder and low back pain, sciatica and old whiplash
• Migraine and tension headaches
• Osteoarthritis of the knee, hip and hands
• Tendon problems: tennis elbow, rotator cuff, Achilles and plantar fasciitis
• Stress, anxiety, low mood and disturbed sleep
• Nausea, indigestion and irritable bowel symptoms
• Period pain, menopause symptoms and support alongside fertility care
• Allergies, sinus problems and the tiredness that lingers after illness
• Injuries from a collision under auto insurance accident benefits, and work injuries under the WSIB program of care

Where the research is solid, we say so; where it is thin, we say that too. Chronic pain, headaches and knee arthritis have the strongest support. If after a fair trial of four to six sessions nothing has shifted, the plan changes rather than the course simply continuing.

Your first session

Allow an hour. The conversation at the start covers more than the sore spot, because in this tradition sleep, digestion and energy all inform where the needles go. The needles themselves are sterile, single-use and about as thick as a hair; a handful are placed and left for 20 to 30 minutes while you lie still and, usually, drift. Cupping is sometimes added for a tight back. If you are also having massage that day, tell us when you book so the appointment is long enough.

Because Ying Wei’s acupuncture days are limited, a course here is planned around them: often once a week for four to eight weeks, with massage or physiotherapy in between if you need it.

Coverage and cost

Most workplace benefit plans cover acupuncture by a registered acupuncturist, and we bill the insurer directly where the plan allows. OHIP does not. Accident benefit and WSIB claims cover it as part of an approved treatment plan with our physiotherapists.

Questions we hear in Vaughan

What are your hours? Monday to Friday 10am to 6pm, Saturday 9am to 2pm. Acupuncture is on selected days only; call or use the request form and we will give you the next available.

Why is acupuncture limited here? Because Ying Wei splits her week between acupuncture, massage and our Newmarket clinic. If you need weekly sessions on a fixed day, our Woodbridge clinic on Weston Road south of Highway 7 runs a full acupuncture day every Wednesday and is a ten-minute drive.

Can I combine it with massage? Yes, with the same practitioner in the same appointment, which suits people whose pain is part muscle tension and part something wider.

Does it hurt? Very little. A dull ache or warmth at the point is normal; anything sharp is adjusted.

Do I need a referral? No. Some insurers want a doctor’s note; check your plan.
